Governor of Kentucky the U.S. Andy Beshear said during his briefing about COVID-19, that this crisis is a great test for everyone. He said that it’s our test as a generation and it’s also a test for our faith. He reminded people to keep social distance and as the God has given us wisdom, use creative ways to stay connected during this crisis. He said that try to reach out congregation in new ways, he warned people not to rush for churches to attend mass gatherings but in case if anyone wants to prepare meals and deliver that to needy people, keep doing these good things, but don’t put your life and lives of others to risk. He also encouraged people to preserve their mental health as well as their physical health and reach out to the people they love and care about.
In Colorado the President and Imam of Islamic Center of Fort Collins Shakir Muhammad broadcasted a live session before the Friday prayer to reach out the Muslim community across Colorado, who were unable to attend the routine Friday sermon since the mosque had been closed temporarily for the services on Thursday, in the wake of COVID-19. Shakir urged the community to follow the verified news only and carefully follow the instructions given by the health officials. He said it is mentioned in the Qur’aan too that don’t trust the word from an invalid source until it’s verified. He also mentioned the Islamic view of worshiping that according to the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم ) the entire earth is made a place of worship so the Muslim doesn’t need to be afraid that they are unable to attend mosque. He further said that Prophet Muhammad ( صلى الله عليه وسلم ) told the believers that for the men to pray in congregation is more rewarded than to pray at homes but in a case of emergency such as now when the places of worship are closed across the world if someone had a habit to pray in mosque would still get the same reward as if he prayed in the mosque, no matter where ever he prays. He said this is challenging but also encouragement for the believers to keep their duties, during this difficult time. He added that there is a story mentioned in the Qur’aan about Jonah when he prayed from where no one had ever prayed before (in the belly of a fish).
Shakir also urged the community to reach out their friends and family wherever they are by the means of social media and mobile apps.
He added that in this global crisis social media can be use virtuously to support each other. He reminded to remember those people who are sick and suffering and those in need even by means of smiles and spreading peace, as these are also the acts of charity in Islam.
